We have also engaged with the Lawn Tennis Association, Sports Wales and the Local Authority as partners in delivering the first phase of the development. This focuses on the refurbishment of the hard courts with flood light facility extended to the lower courts. Significant consultation has occurred with the Tennis Section and I am very grateful to Mike Harpin for formulating our grant application.
I mentioned above the importance of our membership being empowered to engage and influence the direction of the Organisation. It gives our members a sense of ownership and identity. The concept of ‘one member one share’ is also fundamental to the bid to get Community Amateur Sporting Club Status [CASC]. This in turn has very significant advantages in relation to Taxation burden. The current CIC Constitution allows for this change and proposals will be presented to shareholders at the Company’s AGM on Monday 13th February. The passing of these proposals will me that all future AGM's will be open to the entire adult playing membership.
Recent media exposure relating to allegations of child abuse within Soccer has led to a review of our current child protection structures. We have consulted with Tennis Wales and as recommended will be appointing a Welfare Officer. This will be an Honorary post. The appointment will coordinate activities and personnel concerned with the protection of children and vulnerable adults. The post will cover the three Sections and be responsible to the Club Manager and accountable to the CIC Board.
It is sad to announce the death on the 14th December of John Battrick, aged 92, who for many years, together with his wife Pearl and son Gerald, were respected members of the Tennis Club. Gerald, who went onto play at Wimbledon and represented Great Britain, upon his retirement established a tennis school at their home at Waterton.
Also I was very sad to hear of the passing of our Accountant Ken Lewis. Ken was a great support to me and the Club in ensuring financial integrity. He also had great affection for the Club and was very supportive during our change to a CIC. Ken was a very gentle and kind individual and will be greatly missed.
